High Falls is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the state of Alabama, and one of the most famous in the entire south.
While it is not nearly as famous as some of its counterparts in the state, it has one thing that world famous waterfalls do not; you can cliff jump in this park.
It is located on Town Creek in the town of Geraldine, Alabama, and lies in DeKalb County in the northeast corner of the State.
It is approximately 90 miles east of Birmingham, 59 miles south of Huntsville, and 176 miles north of Montgomery.
If you are coming from Birmingham, you would take interstate 59 to Exit 28 in the town of Fort Payne.
You would than take old US highway 35 West to Rainsville, then turn left onto Highway 75.
You would than follow the highway south to the town of Geraldine.
Once there, you would than turn onto Highway 227 North at the towns traffic light (no need to worry; there is only one traffic light)
Once you are on Highway 227 North you simply follow the signs to High Falls Park.
Because of its low population and remoteness, you will find this park offers a lot of different options with one major advantage; very little competing traffic or visitors.
Here are the different options you will have at High Falls Park
High Falls itself is a spectacular waterfall.
While it is only 35 feet high, it is a majestic 300 feet wide, making it one of the widest of all the waterfalls in the south.
When it is at its full strength in the springtime and early summer, it looks like it is even wider.
There is even a gorgeous arch rock that is a favorite of many visitors year around at the top of the falls.
It is near this rock at High Falls that you can do here what you cannot do at the vast number of waterfalls in the country.
You can cliff jump.
If you are more than just an average thrill seeker, High Falls Park is the perfect place for you.
In fact, if this does not get your blood jumping, something is wrong with you.
There are three reasons for this.
Once you follow the directions and you are on Highway 227 North, remember that you are in a very isolated area.
Even though the park and the town are small, it is still very easy to get lost.
Once you are on 227, keep north until to come to a few small buildings and a small parking lot.
Once you are parked, there are restrooms right there to relieve yourself, as well as get into your swimsuit and get ready for jumping and swimming.
You can also fill up your water bottles, as the fresh water here is ten times better than bottled water from the store.
Once you are ready to roll and try the cliff jump, you will need to follow the road down the hill for about 600 feet, and then turn left toward the bridge.
Once you are at the bridge, you need to cross it.
Make sure you stop and take some pictures because this view alone is breathtaking, but this is just the beginning.
However, to actually reach the falls, you will have to backtrack and take a right turn before you cross the bridge.
You will then go through some mild to medium thick bushes and find yourself on a large rock platform.
At this point the waterfall is right in front of you, so just keep walking.
(Remember, these directions are not for the general public; they are only for the cliff jumpers)
To reach the best places to actually jump, keep going past the waterfall where you will find a very large cliff.
One here, you will see a large drop into a very deep pool, as this is your jumping point.
There is a very large rope that is attached to the cliff, so you will want to jump near it, if you want to climb back up.
(Note: The climb back up is only for those in very good shape).
From here, there are only two words of advice left for you.
HAVE FUN!!!
High Falls Park and its beauty, its waterfall, and its cliff jump make it one of the “must see “places on the Alabama backroads day trips.
